Quality is where cross-border orders most often disappoint — not because factories can't produce well, but because no one verifies the bulk against the sample. Here's how proper textile quality control works.
Quality is a process, not a final check
The biggest mistake is treating quality as a single inspection at the end. By then, if something is wrong, it's expensive to fix and your timeline is already at risk. Good quality control happens at three points:
- Raw materials. Check fabric, yarn and trims before production starts.
- In-line. Inspect during production, so problems are caught early.
- Pre-shipment. A final random inspection before anything leaves the factory.
What is AQL?
AQL — Acceptable Quality Limit — is the standard framework for deciding whether a batch passes. It defines how many samples to pull from an order and how many defects (by severity) are acceptable before the batch is rejected. Agreeing an AQL up front means "pass" and "fail" are objective, not a matter of opinion.
Defect severity
Defects are usually classified as:
- Critical — unsafe or unusable; not acceptable.
- Major — likely to affect saleability.
- Minor — small imperfections within tolerance.
Your AQL sets the allowed number of major and minor defects for the order size.
What a good report contains
A pre-shipment inspection report should give you enough to make a shipping decision without being there. Look for:
- The AQL result (pass / fail) and defect counts by severity
- Photos of defects and of the finished goods
- Measurement checks against your specification
- Packing and carton checks
