If you're producing garments under your own brand, you'll hear the terms OEM and private label used almost interchangeably. They overlap, but the distinction matters when you're planning an order.
OEM, briefly
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means the factory manufactures a product to your specification. You bring the design or technical pack; they produce it. The emphasis is on manufacturing to spec.
Private label, briefly
Private label means the finished goods carry your brand — your labels, your packaging, your presentation — even if the underlying product is manufactured by someone else. The emphasis is on branding and ownership.
In practice, most textile orders are both: manufactured to your spec (OEM) and finished under your brand (private label).
What actually matters when you order
Rather than the label, focus on the decisions that affect your order:
- Customization. How much can the product be adapted — fabric, construction, fit, finishing?
- Branding. Woven and printed labels, care labels, hang tags, retail packaging.
- MOQ. Minimum order quantities that fit your market, not the factory's convenience.
- Consistency. On-brand finishing across the entire run, not just the sample.
How to decide
If you have a design and want it manufactured cleanly to spec, you're leading with OEM thinking. If your priority is getting goods to market under your own brand with the right labels and packaging, you're leading with private-label thinking. Most buyers need both — and the real question is whether your manufacturing partner can deliver customization, branding and MOQ together, reliably.
